Forest School / Camp FAQs

Will my 5-year-old be in a separate group from 12-year-olds?

We use a mixed-age model where younger and older children play and learn together. This fosters social and emotional development, with older kids taking on leadership roles and younger ones learning by example. That said, activities are adapted to be age-appropriate, and staff ensure every child is safe, included, and engaged.

Is the Forest School fully outdoors?

Yes . Our sessions take place outdoors for 2 to 4 hours. We have shelters for rain and sun, and often build our own using natural materials. In cold or wet weather, we light fires and offer hot drinks. Proper waterproof gear and a change of clothes are essential.

Where are you located?

We are based in Milford, County Donegal, and run sessions in surrounding areas.

What age range do you accept?

Our programs are designed for children aged 5 to 12, though this may vary by session or event. We have a parent and toddler group for younger children to be involved.

What should my child wear?

Weather-appropriate, waterproof clothing is essential. We recommend layers, a waterproof coat and trousers, wellies or sturdy boots, and a full change of clothes.

What should my child bring?

A backpack with water, snacks, a full change of clothes (including socks and underwear), and any medication your child may need. All belongings should be clearly labeled.

Do the children get wet or muddy?

Yes! Rain or shine, outdoor play means they’ll likely get wet or muddy. That’s part of the fun and learning experience.

What happens in extreme weather?

We monitor weather closely and adapt plans as needed. In high winds, thunderstorms, or extreme cold, sessions may be modified, relocated, or cancelled for safety.

How do you keep children safe outdoors?

Safety is our top priority. Staff are trained in outdoor safety, first aid, and risk assessment. We teach children to manage risk responsibly through guided exploration.

Is Forest School suitable for children with additional needs?

Absolutely. We welcome children of all abilities and work closely with families to provide support and adapt activities when needed.

Do you provide food or snacks?

We recommend children bring their own snacks and water. Occasionally we cook simple snacks over the fire, like toast or marshmallows. Please let us know if you child has any food allergies or dietary requirements so we can adapt our offerings.

How many staff will be with the group?

We maintain a high adult-to-child ratio, often exceeding standard requirements. All staff are Garda-vetted and trained in child safeguarding.

How do you handle conflict between children?

We use restorative practices and positive behavior support to help children resolve conflicts. Staff model respectful communication and guide children to solve problems together.

What kind of activities do you do?

Activities include den building, fire lighting, nature crafts, wildlife tracking, storytelling, tool use (under supervision), and plenty of free play and exploration.

Can I stay with my child?

For younger age groups or first-time attendees, we may allow a short settling-in period. However, children usually engage better when they participate independently.

Do you run during school holidays?
